Ghost's Cross-fire Performance
« on: January 07, 2012, 05:24:00 PM »
So I just grabbed another 5870 to pair up with my existing.  So I set them up in cross-fire today.  Below you can see the benchmark trends over the past couple of years using the same CPU but using 4 different GPU configurations.  I got this for a steal on ebay for $150.  $150 gave me a 67% performance boost.  Massive performance to dollar spent ratio.

I still cant justify upgrading my whole system to a Sandybridge, but my CPU is definitely dragging me down a little.

So as some of you know, i have recently had some PC issues.  After 3 weeks of troubleshooting, I determined it had to be the mobo.  So I got a new one....but decided to just get a 1155 system with a Sandy Bridge 2600k instead of buying another 1366.  Turns out I was right....the new system is running smooth.

I updated the chart below with 2 new Vantage numbers.  The first at 3.4 Ghz is the stock speed.  The second number is with my 4.4Ghz OC.

I didnt predict I would have a significant increase in performance, and this turned out to be true.  The stock 3.4Ghz speed versus my old 3.2Ghz OC was only 2800 points faster, or about 10%.  The 4.4Ghz OC however is a different story....it netted me nearly a 25% increase.

You have to put this into perspective though.  Nearly $700 gave me a 10% performance increase versus the $150 for a 67% increase in my previous post.  I knew what I was doing, and knew the increase would be modest, but I just didnt want to spend $200 on just a new mobo.  I had my reasoning.  If you guys are looking for a upgrade, you need to make sure you think about your system, and if money is tight, make the smartest purchase.

Another thing to mention is overclocking.  For those that dont do it, you need to.  It is easy and free.  In this case, I got a larger boost in performance for $50 (cost of a new aftermarket cpu cooler), than the boost I got for $700.  10% versus 25%.  I actually used the windows based OC tool from Asus....first time I have ever OCed outside of the BIOS.  Working really well so far.  The only thing you need to do is to make sure you have an aftermarket cooler.

Also, I added my original number, which is now my "base", using my old core two duo.
