Hey,
Considering updating my PC box and trying out one or more of the latest FPS (i think i am finally bored of Doom).

Can you recommend a full setup (listing parts) that fits into a $1000 budget that will run COD WaW, Black Ops, and the new Battlefield?

I'm not into PC stuff anymore and just want something that just works. I don't mind building and configuring, but the research alone will bore me to tears. You guys are more experienced in toolbagging PC stuff.

I'd go to BestBuy and grab a pre-configured unit, but it'll be poorly setup for gaming, I'm sure.

Oh.. and I'm doing XP - No Windows 7.

I dont have anything readily available to post, but there are a couple of things that are a must.

1. Windows 7. If you want to put XP in, then you are wasting your money on a new PC. Dont even buy one. Windows 7 is to XP as a Bradd Pitt is to Viper.
2. Intel i7 processor. 2.4 Ghz or higher with the intent on OCing to an easy 3Ghz
3. a decent mobo with SATA2 and pci express 2.0/.....at least 2 slots with a min of 16x/8x. Try to get full 16x/16x though.
4. DDR3 ramm. 6 GB min with heatsink strips.
5. 600 watt power supply rated at 80 or more efficiency. 800watt would be preferred.
6. 7200 rpm HD or HDDs. SATA2. 1GB min. 2GB preferred. This is highly dependent with your personal needs.
7. After market CPU cooler....something simple will be fine ($30-$50 range)
8. Sata DVD drives
9. GPU - the last thing you buy with the intent on buying the most card you can afford with the money you have left. items 1-8 are more important at this stage.

so are most of the games out there using more of the core system resources than GPU these days?

in my past experience, 1-8 could be killer, but the moment u put in a crappy card, nothing else u did to the basic system could help.

you have to build 4 walls and a floor before you put a roof on. Without a strong base, your rig will fail and you will spend more money upgrading sooner in the future.

If you buy a ferrari fast GPU, and mate it to a Toyota Corolla transmission cpu/mobo/ramm combo, guess how fast you will go?

Youll have to trust me. Once you have your base system, it should last you 4-5 years. You can upgrade your GPU several times during that time or just buy another one and go sli/crossfire.

Im not discounting a strong GPU...you have to have a good one. Im just saying that you have to focus on the rest first.

BTW, I assumed you have a decent enough case, if you dont, youll need to drop 60-150 on one.

Nice words mate, I did not know you were such a poet!

Anyway, I value your opinion and fully understand your points. I've been out of touch in the PC world so I figured should I decide to fork around again, I should consult one of those who is up-to-date and actually plays this shit.

I mention the previous experience that ranked the GPU higher as it seemed that was all people were concerned with at the time. I can recall having about 60% of my last rig's cost being seated firmly on the receipt for it.
