Drop-down Menus in Word 07
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:09:00 AM »
I've created a document at work that contains a lot of information that we frequently use. It's full at the moment and in order to add additional topics or links on the title page, I'd have to delete more stuff. I'd like to create drop-down menus that can take them to a destination via the link. The destination would be a bookmark in the document or a place on our intranet. I know how to create the actual drop-down menus via the "Developer" tab, I just need to know how to make those selections go to a specific location like the bookmark or URL. Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks.

How do I do that? I'm pretty sure I can insert an Excel spreadsheet in the doc and make it not appear that way.

you could just do it the easy way.  In your word doc, just highlight a word or selection of words and right click.  Select add hyperlink.  Then just find the doc on your intranet and select it.  Or, go to your intranet, copy the url, then paste it in.  Easy money.

I have that done already. The doc is about 11 pages. The first page consists of all of those links to those other pages and docs and resources. Since the data is increasing, I don't want people to have to scroll to a second page. I want them to be able to see everything on the first page. That's why I want to be able to put in drop-down menus that will replace those links.

e.g. User uses drop-down menu, selects option, goes to page or place.

you should really be using something like excel for something like that.

put your links and all your data on one page, and use another tab as a "user interface".  Reference the data tab to the user tab....this will allow you to construct a nice looking page while keep your data separate.  Should be much more efficient and flexible than word.

Use the help menu to show you how to do a drop down box.  Super easy.  Hell, honestly, if its in excel, you really dont need to create one.  Just throw a sort up top, and it will automatically create a drop down box for every column.

winning.

That sounds pretty straight forward. I've made drop-downs in Excel before. Do you think I can make the selection trigger the link?

I guess you're missing the point of my question. Let's say I have selections A through C in my drop-down menu. If the user selects A, I want it to open a website. If the user selects B, I want it to open a document. If the user selects C, I want it to go to another place in the same document. It's not straight forward on how to make that happen.

the answer is yes because you are simply linking hyper links.  The link will open up an internet explorer and go to where they need to go.
